Candlemaking

Candlemaking

Not long ago we decided to do more crafts with the kids. As homeschooled students they don’t have an ‘art’ class, so it’s up to us to find ways for them to express their creativity. The thing is, we’d also hoped to find activities that didn’t make crafts that cluttered the house. Firstly, our house is small and there aren’t very many surfaces for displaying projects.  Secondly, there’s only so much you can do with popsicle sticks and glue. Candle making seemed like a good outlet. After all, it’s a homemade project that is actually useful. Plus, I’m itching to get started with bees, and this was a way to get involved with one of their products (beeswax) right away.

How did it go? Weeeeeeeelllllllll….. Rachel pointed out after the fact this was probably an undertaking better tried without the kids first. It seemed like a good idea, and was something so simple that “what could possibly go wrong?”

I told Rachel that some people pay a lot of money to have their floors waxed. She was not impressed.

That said, we did get some soy and beeswax candles out of it. I think I can say with relative certainty that I prefer the beeswax to the soy, but as this was only our first go-around the jury is still out on that one. That said, hopefully we will have our own bees and our only choice will be beeswax anyway so it will be a moot point. Here’s to a successful 2019 with beehives!
